One way to enjoy the ride downhill from Frostburg, MD to Cumberland, MD without biking uphill is using the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. The train, which is enjoying increased ridership, includes a baggage car to carry your bike for a small fee. Once in Frostburg you can enjoy the town and attractions around the railroad station, then it's a easy ride back to Cumberland.
If you leave before the train, make sure and stop at Helmstetter's Curve for a picture of the train, surrounding farms and the mountains in the distance. (Pictured above)
After a banner year in 2010, the number of passengers hitching a ride on Mountain Thunder is holding steady in 2011, a Western Maryland Scenic Railroad official said Friday. Mountain Thunder is the nickname given to Engine 734, a vintage 1916 Baldwin locomotive with a 2-8-0 wheel arrangement.
